One country, four languages: reaching customers across Switzerland

German, French, Italian and English all matter in Swiss marketing. Here's who speaks what, and how to write ads and pages that feel local in each region.

Switzerland is one market on a map and several markets in practice. A customer in Zurich, one in Lausanne and one in Lugano will each respond best to a page written in their own language, with their own words. That makes language one of the easiest ways to make ads and websites work harder.

Who speaks what

According to the Federal Statistical Office, these were the main languages of the permanent resident population in 2023. People could name more than one, so the figures add up to more than 100%.

What it means for your marketing

One campaign per language region

Run separate ads and landing pages for German-speaking Switzerland, Romandie and Ticino. Each region gets copy written for it, not a translation of another region's page. Meta and Google both let you target by area, so each version reaches the right people.

Write for Swiss readers, in every language

  • German: written Swiss Standard German uses "ss" instead of "ß", and Swiss words customers expect, such as Offerte for a quote and Natel for a mobile phone.
  • French: Romandie has its own words too, such as septante for seventy and nonante for ninety.
  • Numbers and prices: CHF 1'500 with an apostrophe reads as local in German-speaking Switzerland.
  • Places: name the towns you actually serve. "Winterthur and 30 km around" is clearer than "Switzerland-wide".

English has its place

With 6% naming English as a main language, an English version helps in international areas such as Zurich, Basel and the Lake Geneva region, especially for services that newcomers need.

Answer in the same language

If someone enquires in French, the call, the reminder and the quote should be in French too. It's a small thing that makes customers feel looked after from the first minute.

A simple checklist

  1. List the regions you serve and the language of each.
  2. Give each region its own landing page and its own ads.
  3. Use local words, local towns and Swiss number formats.
  4. Reply, remind and quote in the customer's language.

Every Velra campaign is built this way: landing pages and ads in German, French or Italian, depending on where your customers are.
